About Me

My name is Brandon Mendez, and I am a senior nursing student at Quinnipiac University preparing to enter professional practice. Over the course of nursing school, I have grown not only in knowledge and clinical ability, but also in my understanding of what it means to care for people in a meaningful way. My experiences in emergency care as an EMT and Emergency Department Nurse’s Aide have strengthened my ability to stay calm, work as part of a team, and support patients during stressful and uncertain moments. I am entering the profession with a strong appreciation for compassionate care, patient dignity, and the importance of building trust through everyday interactions. My goal is to continue developing into a nurse who is dependable, skilled, and genuinely present for patients and families. I am devoted to providing holistic, patient-centered care that recognizes each patient as a unique individual with physical, emotional, mental, and personal needs. My goal is to make people feel respected, heard, and genuinely cared for throughout their healthcare experience.

My nursing philosophy is centered on compassion, respect, and patient-centered care. I believe nursing is about much more than completing tasks or treating a diagnosis. It is about caring for people during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives and making sure they feel safe, heard, and supported. I believe every patient deserves to be treated with dignity and understanding, regardless of their condition or background. To me, being a good nurse means combining strong clinical skills with genuine human connection. The way care is delivered matters just as much as the care itself, and even small actions like listening carefully, explaining something clearly, or simply being present can make a real difference in a patient experience. I also believe healing involves more than physical treatment alone, because emotional support, trust, and a calm environment all play a role in recovery. As I continue to grow in this profession, I want my practice to reflect empathy, professionalism, and compassion in every setting. My goal is to be the kind of nurse who not only provides safe and effective care, but also helps patients feel respected, valued, and cared for as individuals.

Nursing Philosophy:

My liberal arts education at Quinnipiac has helped me become a more thoughtful and well-rounded future nurse. While nursing and science courses taught me the clinical side of patient care, my liberal arts courses helped me strengthen my communication, critical thinking, and understanding of other perspectives. One course that had a strong impact on me was ethics, because it taught me that many real-life issues are not simply black and white. It helped me learn how to think through difficult situations, consider different viewpoints, and reflect more carefully before making decisions. These skills are important in nursing because patient care often involves ethical questions, personal values, and complex situations that require more than just textbook knowledge. My liberal arts background has also helped me better understand the importance of self-awareness, respect, and open-mindedness. Overall, these courses helped shape me not only as a student, but also as a person, and they will continue to influence how I communicate, advocate, and care for patients as a nurse.

Pi Kappa Phi Fraternity: Iota Lambda Chapter Member (September 2022 – Present)
Pi Kappa Phi is a nationally recognized fraternity built on leadership, service, scholarship, and personal growth. My involvement in this organization helped me strengthen my communication, accountability, and teamwork skills. It also taught me the value of professionalism, service, and working closely with others, which are all qualities that will help me in nursing.

Vice President / Recruitment Chair
Serving as Vice President and Recruitment Chair gave me the opportunity to grow as a leader within the organization. In this role, I helped oversee chapter responsibilities, plan recruitment events, communicate with members and potential new members, and represent the chapter in a professional way. This position strengthened my confidence, organization, and leadership skills, while also teaching me how to manage responsibilities and work with different personalities.

Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance Member / Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
My experience with Southampton Village Volunteer Ambulance has been an important part of my growth in healthcare. As an EMT, I responded to emergency and non-emergency calls, assessed patients, provided immediate care, and assisted with transport when needed. This role taught me how to stay calm under pressure, think quickly, and communicate effectively in stressful situations. It also gave me valuable hands-on experience and confirmed my desire to pursue nursing.

Initiating mobilization after a total hip replacement and its influence on the occurrence of a deep vein thrombosis in patients 65-years-old and above

PICO Poster Presentation - Quinnipiac University

This PICO Project examined whether early ambulation after total hip replacement could reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis in patients 65 years and older. It compared patients who began walking within 12 hours after surgery to those who started ambulating after 24 hours. The project was based on evidence from seven studies that looked at mobility, recovery, and postoperative complications in older orthopedic patients. Overall, the findings showed that early ambulation was associated with lower rates of DVT, shorter hospital stays, improved mobility, better pain outcomes, and fewer complications. This project also emphasized that early mobilization is not only a safe and effective nursing intervention, but also an important part of promoting circulation, preventing avoidable complications, and supporting recovery in a vulnerable patient population.

Future Career Goals

As I begin my nursing career, my goal is to start in the Emergency Department, where I can build on my previous emergency care experience and continue developing as a nurse in a fast-paced setting. I am drawn to the ED because I enjoy the urgency, teamwork, and variety that come with caring for patients during critical and unpredictable moments. As a new graduate nurse, I hope to work in a unit that will challenge me, support my growth, and help me strengthen my assessment skills, clinical decision-making, and confidence in practice. Over time, I want to become a dependable ED nurse who can think clearly under pressure, communicate effectively, and provide compassionate care to patients and families during some of their most difficult moments.

Year 1 SMART Goal:

During my first year as a licensed RN, I plan to begin my career in the Emergency Department, successfully complete my new graduate residency or orientation, and grow into managing a full patient assignment with increasing independence, safety, and confidence.

Year 3 SMART Goal:

By my third year of nursing practice, I plan to be more established and confident in my role, continue building my skills in emergency care, and begin seriously considering a return to school for further nursing education.

Nursing is an art: and if it is to be made an art, it requires an exclusive devotion as hard a preparation as any painter's or sculptor's work; for what is the having to do with dead canvas or dead marble, compared with having to do with the living body, the temple of God's spirit? It is one of the Fine Arts: I had almost said, the finest of Fine Arts.”
